What moves the price

Five things that change your Wollongong quote.

1. Distance from the coast.

This is the single biggest factor. A home in Corrimal or Fairy Meadow near the surf needs 316 marine-grade stainless, while an inland home in Unanderra or Dapto can use perforated aluminium and save hundreds per door with no real corrosion penalty. We spec to your street, not a catalogue.

2. Mesh and frame grade.

Perforated aluminium is cheapest, 304 stainless mid, 316 marine-grade stainless dearest. The frame coating matters too, a marine-grade powder coat to AS 3715 costs more but lasts on the coast. See stainless vs aluminium for the trade-offs.

3. Locking and egress hardware.

A basic single deadlock is cheaper than a three-point lock, and a key-free internal release on a bedroom or exit door adds a little. We never skip the egress release on habitable-room doors, it is a safety requirement, not an option.

4. Hinged vs sliding.

Sliding security doors cost more than hinged because the track, rollers and locking are more involved. Most homes have one or two sliding openings (the rear patio) and the rest hinged.

5. Quantity and access.

Doing several openings in one visit is more efficient than one-offs, so a whole-house job is better value per opening. Awkward access, upper-storey windows or odd-shaped heritage openings add a little labour.

A real example

A worked whole-house cost.

A three-bedroom brick home in Figtree, set back from the coast, wants the lot done sensibly:

  • Front hinged security door, 304 stainless, triple-lock: $1,050
  • Rear sliding security door, 304 stainless: $1,150
  • Three bedroom window security screens, quick-release egress, at $340: $1,020
  • Two side-passage window screens, fixed, at $250: $500
  • Pet door built into the rear door: $240

Total: $3,960 supplied and installed, done over a day and a half. Because Figtree is inland we used 304 rather than 316, which kept several hundred dollars in your pocket. The same job on a beach street at Corrimal in 316 stainless would run closer to $4,600.
