Window security screens in Wollongong.

Fixed and hinged stainless steel window security screens, so you can leave the windows open for the Illawarra sea breeze without leaving the house open. 316 marine-grade stainless for coastal homes, egress-safe screens on bedrooms, AS 5039 compliant. Free measure and quote.

Why window screens, not just a security door.

A good security door on the front does not help if a ground-floor window down the side passage is wide open all summer. In Wollongong, where the coastal climate means most homes run windows open from October through to April, the windows are often the weak point. A window security screen lets the breeze and the light through while keeping the opening secured to the same standard as a security door.

We screen to a priority order: ground-floor windows first, then any window hidden from the street down a side passage or behind a fence, then bedroom windows so you can sleep with them open, then anything that a carport roof, pergola or tree makes easy to reach upstairs.

Screen types.

  • Fixed security screens: the standard. A 316 or 304 stainless mesh panel fixed to the window frame with one-way screws. Strongest and lowest cost per window. ~$180-$380.
  • Hinged security screens: for windows you need to clean or use as egress. Opens inward on a latch, locks shut day to day. ~$280-$480.
  • Quick-release egress screens: for bedroom windows, an internal lever drops the screen in a fire without a key or tool. Required where the window is a designated escape point.

Bedroom egress, done correctly.

A bedroom window is a fire escape. A fixed security screen that traps someone in a smoke-filled room is dangerous, so on bedroom windows we always fit a hinged or quick-release screen with an internal latch. It is secure from outside, opens from inside in seconds, and satisfies the NSW fire-egress expectation for habitable rooms. This is the detail budget installers skip.

A worked example.

A brick home in Fairy Meadow, two streets back from the beach, wants the four ground-floor windows and two bedroom windows screened. Four fixed 316 stainless screens at $260 each ($1,040) plus two quick-release egress bedroom screens at $360 each ($720) comes to $1,760 supplied and installed in one visit. Because it is close to the water we use 316 throughout rather than dropping to aluminium.

Where we install window screens.

Window screens go hand in hand with a security screen door on the entry doors, and a flyscreen is the lower-cost option where security is not the concern. See our cost guide for full pricing.
